Avoid Problems When Painting Vinyl Siding

Old vinyl is a problem when it comes to painting it. UV light fades the siding over time and causes to look rather ugly. Many people have then tried painting vinyl siding only to be disappointed as it started peeling within a few months. To avoid this problem, the proper cleaning and preparation must be done before re-painting.

Your first step in cleaning the siding before painting vinyl siding is to either rent or borrow a high-pressure washer if you do not already own one. The washer should be at least three thousand psi. The reason you are doing this is that you must remove all the dirt that has built up over the years off the vinyl.

When pressure washing the siding, start at the top and work your way on down. Stand fairly close to the siding so that you clean it thoroughly and get all the old paint removed. This is an important step that needs to be done before painting vinyl siding. A surface de-glosser should be used to help remove the shine on the surface after the cleaning has been finished and before the painting. A paint supply store should carry a good surface de-glosser.

Before painting vinyl siding and after the cleaning is done, you will need to apply a primer coat to the siding. Adding a bonding agent to the primer will help the primer and paint bond to the old siding.

When it comes to actually painting vinyl siding, your best option is a commercial airless spray painter. This unit draws out the paint right from the five-gallon paint can, through the hose and into the paint sprayer. If you do not have your own then you should be able to rent one from an equipment rental store. Many contractors and painters recommend that a latex paint be applied because it seems to work with the natural expansion and contraction that occurs with vinyl siding.
